Lakers blow big lead before putting away Knicks, clinch top seed for NBA Summer League tourney

first_imgLAS VEGAS — The Lakers defeated the New York Knicks 109-92 in an NBA Summer League game on Tuesday night at Cox Pavilion to complete the pre-playoff portion of the event with a 3-0 record and clinch the top seed for the single-elimination tournament that begins Wednesday. While the defending Summer League champions led for all but a few minutes of Tuesday’s game, they blew a 25-point second-half lead before second-year guard Josh Hart helped put them back on track for a victory. With the 25-point cushion and rookie big man Moe Wagner having already suffered a left knee and left ankle sprain in the first half, Lakers summer league coach Miles Simon pulled Hart, rookie guard Svi Mykhailiuk and veteran Alex Caruso to the bench midway through the third quarter. The Knicks took advantage of the absences, burying a slew of 3-point baskets to finish the third quarter on a 28-3 run that tied the score. The Knicks took a three-point lead to start the fourth quarter, but Hart and Mykhailiuk helped the Lakers reel off 16 consecutive points to regain control of the game.Hart finished with 27 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals. Reserve Jeff Ayres, who started in Wagner’s place to begin the second half, had 17 points and four rebounds on 7-of-7 shooting. Xavier Rathan-Mayes added 10 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals off the bench. Caruso, who started, had five points, four rebounds and a team-high 10 assists. Mykhailiuk was held to nine points on 3-for-12 shooting, and Nick King had 15 points off the bench.
