Gala raises funds for MS

first_imgSince 1993, Davis and Hilfiger, whose sister has MS, have helped raise millions of dollars through the annual fundraiser. The money supports Davis’ foundation, whose Nancy Davis Center Without Walls program brings together MS experts to combat the disease that attacks the central nervous system and afflicts about 300,000 Americans and more than 1 million people worldwide. Davis said when she was first diagnosed in 1991, doctors practically gave her a death sentence. She soon learned that many experts were unknowingly doing the same research and started the Without Walls program, bringing together the field’s brightest minds. With the help of the medicine her organization has helped develop, Davis lives a full life. “At the end of the day, everybody gets something,” she said. “Life is a terminal illness. I’ve never met anybody who has got out of it alive.” Hollywood was out in full force Friday night at the 14th annual Race to Erase MS, with organizers expecting $2.5 million to be raised at the gala. Held at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza hotel in Century City, co-chairs Nancy Davis and fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger walked the red carpet with hopes of raising awareness and money for multiple sclerosis treatment and research. This year’s theme, Dance to Erase MS, goes a long way to dispel any myths about the disease, Davis said. “When you first learn you have MS, you think you’re never going to walk again, much less dance,” said Davis, who has the disease. “If you take care of yourself, you can dance forever.” rick.coca@dailynews.com (818) 713-3329160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
