ESPN Releases Preseason ‘Football Power Index’ Ratings

first_imgESPN's Football Power Index. Twitter/@bobarcher1Twitter/@bobarcher1We’re still over six months away from the start of the 2015 college football season, but it’s never too early to start debating which teams have the best shot at reaching the second College Football Playoff. While most fans believe that Ohio State has a great shot at repeating as national champion, there will be plenty of challengers. ESPN has already put together its Preseason FPI Ratings – which is basically an estimate of team strength (more on that here). Not surprisingly, the Buckeyes check in at No. 1, with Alabama sitting at No. 2. It may shock some fans to see LSU at No. 3 and Baylor at No. 4, however. Here are the top 25 schools, per ESPN. You can see the entire list here – all 128 teams are ranked.1. Ohio State 2. Alabama 3. LSU 4. Baylor 5. Oregon 6. TCU 7. Notre Dame 8. Ole Miss 9. Georgia 10. Arkansas 11. Texas A&M 12. UCLA 13. USC 14. Tennessee 15. Oklahoma 16. Michigan State 17. Stanford 18. Auburn 19. Clemson 20. Arizona State 21. Florida State 22. Mississippi State 23. Georgia Tech 24. Missouri 25. Virginia TechSome other surprises? Notre Dame, despite a quarterback controversy, sits at No. 7. Arkansas and Texas A&M – two teams that did not finish with winning records in the SEC West – come in at No. 10 and No. 11. And in total, there are 10 SEC teams in the top 25.last_img read more

Football Chris Worley the quarterback of a confident defense

OSU redshirt junior linebacker Chris Worley (35) flexes after a tackle during the Buckeyes’ 31-0 loss against Clemson in the Fiesta Bowl on Dec. 31. Credit: Alexa Mavrogianis | Photo EditorOhio State redshirt senior linebacker Chris Worley is filled with confidence. Moving to the middle linebacker spot, Worley now has the opportunity to lead the Buckeye defense after a very successful 2016 season.Worley was a big part of the record-breaking OSU defense a season ago. In 2016, as the Buckeyes’ weak-side, or WILL, linebacker Worley was fourth on the team with 70 tackles, recorded 4.5 tackles for loss and had an interception.A former three-star recruit out of Glenville High School in Cleveland, Worley is used to moving around to different defensive positions throughout his college career.“I moved to SAM (strong-side linebacker) and battled with a first-rounder until the end of the first game honestly,” Worley said. “That speaks a lot about Darron (Lee), but it also speaks a lot about myself. That was a battle that I’ll never forget because it made us both better. That’s two positions right there, then I can also play Mike (middle linebacker) or WILL (weak-side linebacker) and play it as well as the best of them.”Worley said the versatility is what it took to get him on the football field.“The only thing I did was put my head down and just went as hard as I could and coach Meyer told me, ‘I don’t know what you’re going to play, but if you just keep going, next year you’ll find a way.’ And that’s what I did,” Worley said. “That’s where I’m at right now. It was a struggle, but at the end of the day, it made me better.”With the amount of experience Worley has at multiple positions on the defensive side, OSU linebacker coach Bill Davis had no hesitation at putting him in the middle.“That Mike ‘backer’ is our quarterback,” Davis said. “He has to understand everybody’s job, he has to line them up. One of the things about a Mike ‘backer is you not only have to line up others, you have to be able to do your own job after, and not everybody can do that. Chris is outstanding and getting everybody and himself lined up.”The role of the defensive “quarterback” is much more than getting his teammates lined up in the game. It defines Worley’s role as a leader of the defense. The vocal aspect of being a leader is something that Worley has always had, but did not want to bring out in the past.“I didn’t want to be the biggest loudmouth and wasn’t even really touching the field in the ways that I wanted to,” Worley said. “But sometimes it’s better to go under the radar and help the team in any way they need you. But, I feel like now I’m in a position to be more vocal.”Worley’s responsibility of leading the defense is especially critical now that linebacker Raekwon McMillan has left for the NFL. Associate head coach and defensive coordinator Greg Schiano feels that Worley will fill those shoes nicely.“We lost what I think is a man’s man in Raekwon McMillan,” Schiano said. “Just a really fine football player and a smart football player. We needed to make sure that we could try and replace him with a guy that has that kind of presence about him. I really am impressed with (Worley) in two days.”Junior linebacker Jerome Baker is not worried about Worley being the unquestioned leader of the defense.“Worley’s going to do his job,” Baker said. “I just gotta do my job, and make sure he can trust me the same way I trust him.”The expectations are high for the Cleveland native. However, this is the opportunity that Worley has been waiting on for a long time.“It’s something that I’ve always wanted,” Worley said. “I’m a grinder. I like to hit people. So just to give me that more ammunition in my toolbox to just go kind of hurt some people, that’s what I like to do. It’s a blessing to be in this position and it’s up to me to sort of live up to expectations.”Worley might have high expectations for next season. However, his confidence is not going anywhere.  “I feel like I’m one of the most dynamic players in the country,” he said. read more

We shouldnt be in the situation – McCarthy

first_imgSouthampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy believes the club shouldn’t be in their current situation of having to battle for Premier League survival. The Saints are currently seated in 19th position three points from safety and have already sacked Mark Hughes replacing him with Ralph Hassenhuttl. The former RB Leipzig becomes Southampton’s fifth managerial appointment in the space of four years, as they struggle to find some consistency, however, McCarthy believes the club are too big to get relegated.“I would probably be able to enjoy it more if we were higher up the table,” he said, according to the Telegraph.“Southampton is a massive club. We shouldn’t be in the situation that we’re in.”Solskjaer slams Man United’s draw: “We should have won” Andrew Smyth – August 31, 2019 Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was left to rue another missed opportunity as Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw against 10-man Southampton.McCarthy also spoke about his improvement over the last 12 months, as he became a regular in the English National team setup.McCarthy made his first appearance in the Premier League last season during a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford last December and has permanently replaced Fraser Forster as the club’s first choice shot-stopper.He has been the mainstay in the goalkeeping department for the Saints in 2018, but the club have won only four Premier League games since the turn of the year.“It has been a very good year,” says the 29-year-old. “I’m happy. Playing week-in, week-out takes care of everything else. I can enjoy my life outside of football.”last_img read more

27yearold fatally injured while playing punching game identified

first_img March 20, 2018 SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — Authorities Tuesday released the name of the 27-year-old victim who was fatally injured while playing a “punching game” with a friend in a Gaslamp Quarter sports bar.Corey Poole and a friend were drinking and began “consensually sparring” and punching each other in the chest early Saturday morning when one of the punches dropped Poole to the ground, where he became unresponsive, the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office said. Poole was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital, where he died less than an hour later.Police and paramedics responded to Jolt’n Joe’s at 379 Fourth Avenue just before 1 a.m. Saturday after a 911 caller reported Poole’s injuries, San Diego police said. Poole had apparently gone out drinking at the downtown sports bar with a group of friends.“The decedent and a friend began consensual sparring, consisting of concurrently punching each other with closed fists on the chest,” the Medical Examiner’s Office said, describing what police had previously called “playing a punching game.”“After receiving several punches to the chest, the decedent was struck and immediately collapsed and became unresponsive,” the Medical Examiner’s Office said.Bar patrons began giving Poole CPR, and San Diego firefighters and paramedics took over when they arrived at the scene, authorities said. Poole was taken to the hospital, where the resuscitation efforts continued, but he never responded. Doctors declared him dead at 1:45 a.m.Poole’s friend remained at the location and was later taken to a hospital for medical treatment, police said. He was not initially arrested, and it was unclear if he would face charges. The Medical Examiner’s Office had not yet determined the cause of death this morning and said the manner of death — whether an accident, a homicide or something else — is pending based on the police investigation. Local Officials Prepare for Cutbacks at Ft Hood

first_imgAfter learning last week that Fort Hood would lose 9 percent of its military population as the Army continues to downsize, officials in central Texas began to address the likely impacts. On Monday, a spokesperson for Killeen said the city had taken into account the pending personnel cutbacks and had budgeted accordingly.“There will absolutely be an impact. Everybody is being conservative,” spokesperson Hillary Shine told KXXV.The school district could experience a drop in enrollment and associated funding from the federal government, but the school system had not yet come up with an estimate of the likely changes.“At this time it is difficult to project the impact as many variables must be taken into consideration,” said Superintendent John Craft.Fort Hood is slated to lose 3,350 soldiers under the restructuring the Army announced last week, a cut exceeded only by a reduction of 3,402 troops at Fort Benning, Ga. Despite the outcome, the chairman of the Heart of Texas Defense Alliance was pleased the post did not lose any of its four brigade combat teams.“The Central Texas community will survive and continue to grow. Fort Hood is an enduring installation. The prospects for the future of Fort Hood are still good,” Pete Taylor, who commanded Fort Hood from 1991 to 1993, told the Statesman.Fort Benning and Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, will see their BCTs converted into much smaller maneuver battalion task forces as a result of the restructuring occurring over the next two years. This Bill Could Help Independent Music Creators Fight Infringement Without Going Broke

first_imgNews This Bill Could Help Independent Music Creators bill-could-help-independent-music-creators-fight-infringement-without-going-broke Twitter Without a small claims court, independent creators have to fight infringement at federal court, which can get expensiveJennifer VelezGRAMMYs May 3, 2019 – 3:54 pm “A Federal court action can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to bring to fruition, while small creators report that most infringements are valued at $3,000 or less,” Yahoo reports. – Conversations In Advocay #54A new bill supported by both Democrats and Republicans would create a copyright small claims court that would help independent music creators protect their work. https://twitter.com/CopyrightOffice/status/1123690730801836033 Email center_img The Copyright Alternative in Small Claims Enforcement Act (CASE Act) of 2019 was reintroduced on May 1, 2019 in the House Of Representatives by Reps. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and Doug Collins (R-GA)—two recent GRAMMYs on the Hill honorees—and,  for the first time, introduced in the Senate by Senators John Kennedy (R-LA,) Thom Tillis (R-NC,) Dick Durbin (D-IL,) and Mazie Hirono (D-HI). The House bill has a total of 8 bipartisan co-sponsors, including House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) along with Reps. Roby (R-Ala.), Johnson (R-Ga.), Cline (R-Va.), Chu (D-Calif.), Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.) and Lieu (D-Calif.).If passed, the bill would allow creators without the resources to engage in expensive litigation the opportunity to protect their work. Without a small claims court, creators are forced to try to fight infringement in federal court, which can get expensive. The U.S. Copyright office, which would house the new small claims court, adds that for some creators who would like to fight small damages, going to federal court may not be reasonable. “While a copyright owner may want to stop an infringement that has caused a relatively small amount of economic damage, that owner may be dissuaded from filing a lawsuit because the prospect of a modest recovery may not justify the potentially large expense of litigation,” the office states on its website.Under the language of the CASE Act, damages in the small claims court would be capped at $30,000 per case. Participation would be voluntary, and claimants can initiate action without a lawyer and even without being present. The The Recording Academy strongly supports the CASE Act, which would benefit countless songwriters, performers and studio professionals. During District Advocate Day in 2018, members of the Academy across the country lobbied their representatives in support of the bill. Although the House Judiciary Committee held a hearing on the CASE Act last year, it was never brought up for a vote before the 115th Congress adjourned, necessitating its reintroduction. There’s More Work To Be Done To Ensure All Songwriters Get Paid Their Due Facebook This Bill Could Help Independent Music Creators Fight Infringement Without Going Broke Read morelast_img read more

India hopes to calm fuel price stink with basmati fragrance

first_imgThe appetising fragrance of India’s basmati rice will soon have a major role to play in keeping fuel prices down. This is because India is seeking alternative options to dollar payment for keeping the Iranian oil flowing despite US President Donald Trump’s clampdown on global trade with Iran.Iran is the biggest importer of Indian basmati and the commodity is a serious contender to become India’s rupee payment conduit for keeping the Iranian oil taps open.India is taking steps to relax basmati export norms to facilitate continued oil imports through the rupee route without inviting US sanctions.New Delhi wants to make the most of the exemption that Washington has granted it along with seven other oil importing nations in transactions with Iran. India has also received US waiver for its role in the development of Iran’s Chabahar port.India’s basmati exports last year topped $4.7 billion with Iran continuing to maintain its top position with imports worth $905 million. Indian basmati exports during the 2018-19 fiscal year has already crossed $2 billion with Iran keeping the top spot and Saudi Arabia a close second.Last year’s strong export performance of the commodity had increased sowing in India but the sudden re-introduction of the US sanctions was a dampener. Now that the US has granted India an exemption in the trade with Iran, the prospects of a thumping performance in basmati export have brightened. The rupee payment route will ease the trade even further, export sector sources say.The rupee payment facility and the enabling of even barter deals with agricultural commodities have come as a boon to the market that had suffered some amount of uncertainty over the situation in the Middle East and tension between Washington to Teheran. Iran usually decides the import quotas after the harvest season by mid-November. So, the traders think the decision of the Indian authorities to ease the norms has come at an opportune time and will help boost the market sentiment.  Indian farmers of rice varieties other than basmati have already found cheer in the Chinese market outlook. A recent buyer-seller meeting in China, which is the world’s biggest producer and importer of rice, has had an excellent outcome for Indian exporters. About 80 percent of India’s $4.7 billion worth of basmati exports last year went to the Middle Eastern countries led by Iran. Indian producers want to do better this year after having sown more areas after last year’s bullish brighter global outlook. Punjab and Haryana produce nearly 50 percent of the basmati varieties that go at a premium in the export market. Uttar Pradesh produces about 12 percent.last_img read more

Justin Trudeau rebuked on ethics

first_imgIn this file photo taken on 7 March 2019, Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau speaks to the media at the national press gallery in Ottawa, Ontario. Photo: AFPCanada’s ethics watchdog rapped prime minister Justin Trudeau on Wednesday, concluding in the lead-up to October elections that he broke rules by arm-twisting his attorney general to settle a criminal case against engineering giant SNC-Lavalin.The scandal, revealed earlier this year, tarnished the prime minister’s golden boy image, and cost two ministers and two senior officials their jobs, while support plunged for his Liberals before they clawed back some ground. New polls show the party in a dead heat with the opposition Conservatives.Independent parliamentary ethics commissioner Mario Dion said Trudeau and his officials had wrongly sought to “exert influence over the attorney general in her decision whether to intervene in a matter relating to a criminal prosecution.”It marks the second time that Trudeau has been found in breach of Canada’s ethics laws, after being rebuked in 2017 for accepting a paid family vacation on the private island in the Bahamas of the Aga Khan, a business magnate and spiritual leader of Ismaili Muslims.Trudeau must pay a small fine of up to Can$500 (US$375) for contravening Canada’s conflict of interest act, but with only two months before national elections the political costs could be much steeper.SNC-Lavalin, one of the world’s major engineering firms, was charged in 2015 with allegedly paying Can$47 million in bribes between 2001 and 2011 to secure contracts in Libya during the rule of former strongman Moamer Kadhafi, and of defrauding the Libyan government of Can$130 million. The charges relate to the world’s largest irrigation scheme — the Great Man Made River Project — to provide fresh water to the cities of Tripoli, Benghazi and Sirte.- ‘Assault’ on judicial independence -An opposition party leader, Jagmeet Singh, called the ethics breach “outrageous,” while Conservative Party chief Andrew Scheer said it was “an unforgivable assault on the independence of our justice system.””Canadians understand we have to be vigilant against those who want to abuse the power of their office and engage in this type of corrupt behavior and I do believe this will be top of mind in this election,” Scheer added.Trudeau has steadfastly denied accusations that his inner circle sought to shield SNC-Lavalin from a corruption trial. On Wednesday, he offered a nuanced mea culpa.”I disagree with some of (the commissioner’s) conclusions but I fully accept this report and take responsibility for everything that happened,” he said.”But at the same time, I can’t apologize for standing up for Canadian jobs, because that’s part of what Canadians expect me to do.”Earlier his office released an independent review of the joint roles of Canada’s attorney general and justice minister, rejecting calls to split the two jobs.Attorney general Jody Wilson-Raybould refused to ask prosecutors to settle the case, and the trial is set to proceed. But after resigning, Canada’s first indigenous attorney general testified to lawmakers that she had experienced “consistent and sustained” political pressure to interfere in the case, including “veiled threats.”Dion concluded: “The authority of the prime minister and his office was used to circumvent, undermine and ultimately attempt to discredit the decision of the director of public prosecutions as well as the authority of Ms Wilson-Raybould as the Crown’s chief law officer.”He said Trudeau “directed his staff to find a solution that would safeguard SNC-Lavalin’s business interests in Canada.”He also found that “partisan political interests were improperly put to the attorney general for consideration in the matter.”A conviction at trial would result in SNC-Lavalin being deprived of lucrative government contracts resulting in up to 9,000 jobs lost, according to the company. The Montreal-based firm openly lobbied the government for an out-of-court settlement that would result in a fine and agreeing to compliance measures.Wilson-Raybould’s replacement as attorney general, David Lametti, has so far only said he is considering the issue. In April, Trudeau kicked Wilson-Raybould and budget minister Jane Philpott out of the Liberal Party. Philpott had resigned her cabinet post in solidarity with Wilson-Raybould and criticized Trudeau’s handling of the case.last_img read more

Houston Reacts To Supreme Court Fisher v UT Affirmative Action Ruling

first_imgWikipediaMichael Olivas, a UH law professor and the interim president of the University of Houston Downtown, celebrated the Supreme Court decision in Fisher v. University of Texas.“This is a very good day,” Olivas said. “It shows that there’s moral order restored in this universe.”Olivas said Mexican-Americans, for example, are still vastly underrepresented in the state’s major universities. The 4-3 ruling ends a years-long legal battle between Abigail Fisher, a white woman from Sugar Land, and the University of Texas at Austin.“I hope this is a signal to other disgruntled, white, aggrieved plaintiffs that just because they didn’t get in and because they weren’t admissible, it doesn’t mean that they lost their seat to some less deserving person of color,” Olivas said. The ruling upholds UT’s admissions program, which among other factors, considers the race and ethnicity of applicants.“It’s only a factor of a factor of a factor of who gets into the university,” said Charles “Rocky” Rhodes, a professor at the Houston College of Law.He said UT was able to provide evidence that Texas’ Top 10 Percent law wasn’t enough to ensure diversity in the school’s classrooms. The law mandates public colleges admit the top students from any of the state’s high schools.Rhodes said since UT’s system is so unique, the ruling won’t act as a precedent in future affirmative action cases.“But what it does do (is) show that the Supreme Court is not poised to strike down race-conscious admissions programs as long as those programs are supported by sufficient evidence of their necessity and need,” the professor said.Rhodes added that it sends a message to public colleges to make sure they really study how and if race should be considered as part of their admissions policies. The ruling does not end the debate over how schools achieve a diverse student body.At the University of Houston’s Student Center, education major Bianca Ezumah said diversity is one of the reasons she chose UH. But she didn’t think race should be considered in admissions.“I think you should admit people based off if you think they would excel at your university,” Ezumah said. “Or if you think they deserve the chance.”Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton criticized the ruling. In a statement, he said the opportunities at the University of Texas “should be available to all students based on their merit, not the color of their skin.”State Sen. Kel Seliger, R-Amarillo, chairs the Texas Senate Higher Education Committee. He said the decision confirms that UT’s admissions policy was designed to create diversity without discriminating against any group. Abbotts MailIn Ballot Push Creates Backlog For County Election Workers

first_imgRYAN POPPEAbbott Campaign Mail-in Ballot ApplicationGov. Greg Abbott’s campaign to register mail-in ballot applications for seniors ahead of the deadline is creating costly headaches for many county election officials.  During a primary election season, campaigns will try to help senior citizens register for mail-in ballots. But Texas election officials, including Bexar County’s election administrator Jacquelyn Callanen, are mailing back hundreds of applications, all of them linked to one campaign.“When we receive a primary election, we receive a number of mail-in ballot applications from a number of campaigns and we started to receive some last week that did not have a party check on them,” Callanen said. Those incomplete applications came from Abbott’s re-election campaign and were mailed not only to seniors that voted Republican in the last election but also to traditional Democrat and independent voters, according to the campaign.Campaign spokesman John Wittman said part of its effort is to attract voters who don’t traditionally vote in a Republican primary.“This mail-in ballot application drive is result of a test that Texans for Greg Abbott did in 2014. This election, we’ve expanded it 10-fold,” Wittman said.Glen Maxey, who heads up the Texas Democratic Party’s mail-in ballot campaign, was one of the first to notice problems with the Abbott application, which he said is decorated with the Abbott campaign logo and has very small printed instructions informing the voter they must indicate whether they need a Democrat or Republican mail-in ballot.“This application is about six-point type. A person of age — such as myself — I can’t read the application even with my glasses,” Maxey said.Callanen said it is costing individual counties hundreds of dollars to reject the incomplete applications, and the extra effort of sending out all the rejection letters is slowing down her office’s productivity. The deadline to submit an application for a mail-in ballot is Feb. 23. Poor Peoples Campaign Brings Message to Congress

first_imgBy James Wright, Special to the AFRO, jwright@afro.comU.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) and U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) recently convened a hearing on poverty in the country and the key witness was the Rev. William Barber II, the co-chair of the Poor People’s Campaign.Barber testified on June 12 at the U.S. Capitol before such lawmakers as Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) and Joseph Kennedy III (D-Mass.) and Sens. Cory Booker (D-N.J.), Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Patty Murray (D-Wash.) and Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), who serves as the Democratic Whip. Before Barber spoke, Cummings talked about the importance of the forum.Rep. Elijah Cummings (pictured) and Sen. Elizabeth Warren recently held a hearing on the scourge of poverty. (Courtesy photo)“President Obama’s most significant accomplishment was pulling America out of the Great Recession,” he said. “During his administration, we had 75 straight months of job growth. However, far too many Americans are not doing well economically. In 2016, 40 million Americans are living in poverty as the stock market soared.”Cummings said that Americans life expectancy has declined over the past two years and he noted that many people are going into bankruptcy because of the high cost of medical treatment.  He noted that “everyone should benefit from our nation’s growth.”Warren said that the average American is in a dire financial situation.“Forty percent of adults don’t have $400 for an emergency,” Warren said. “Fifty percent of all working Americans don’t have a dollar for retirement. America is in a crisis.”The Institute for Policy Studies (IPS), a think tank based in the District of Columbia released a statement on June 12 that noted that $140 million Americans or 43.5 percent of the country’s population is either poor or low income “in the world’s richest country.” The statement noted that the 400 wealthiest Americans now own more wealth than the bottom 64 percent of the U.S. population or 204 million people. The IPS statement said White people made up 42.5 percent of the poor while Latinos consists of 27.4 percent and 22.7 percent of Blacks consisted of the impoverished.Barber introduced several participants in the Poor People’s Campaign who consists of those in the ranks of the working poor. He invited them to talk about their lives.Pamela Sue Rush, who lives in rural Alabama, talked about working a full-time low wage job and having to travel miles to Birmingham to seek treatment for her daughter as well as paying high utility bills to live in a mold-infested house that was obtained by a predatory loan.“It is so unfair,” Rush said. “People shouldn’t have to live like I live.”Barber made a point that people of color aren’t the only ones suffering from poverty and invited Nick Smith of Southwest Virginia to speak.“I am the son of a coal miner’s daughter,” Smith said, playing off of the popular Loretta Lynn song. “For many years, I could not drink the water we bathed in. When the coal companies left, there was nothing to replace them and organized labor doesn’t exist in Appalachia.”Smith said he has seen instances where poor Whites are pitted against Blacks and Browns to keep all three groups down.“Poor Whites are intentionally segregated from Blacks and Browns to keep us from organizing,” he said. The members of Congress listened to the testimony but offered no policy solutions. However, Lee suggested that there should be an effort to make sure that every American earns a living wage.last_img read more

AFRO Exclusive Social Media Star B Simone Dishes on Life and Her

first_imgBy Micha Green, AFRO Washington, D.C. Editor, mgreen@afro.comFor those who haven’t stumbled across her rants, raps, skits and famous “B. Simone tone” on Instagram, her improvisational comedy on “Wild ‘N Out” or her music, B. Simone is becoming a name to know and remember.  The entertainer with 2.1 million followers on Instagram is now on a nationwide comedy tour that is making a stop in D.C. on Dec. 26, and she is inviting people to come learn more about her and have a fun night of laughs.“It’s about my life, my personal life.  My comedy’s about my relationship, sex life, what I’ve been going through with men and it’s just super relatable. And I’ve turned tragedy and heartbreak into comedy,” B. Simone told the AFRO.Instagram and “Wild ‘N Out” star B. Simone will be in D.C. on Dec. 28 at City Winery in Northeast, D.C.The rising star has not always been a comedienne, but she has always been an entertainer.“I come from a background of girl groups and R&B pop singing. So I started off   wanting to be a singer honestly.  I’ve been in five girl groups.  I moved to Atlanta from Dallas to pursue music and acting. And social media is what made me a comedienne,” she said.Even in the earlier days of social media, with sites such as MySpace, B. Simone was active.“I’ve been doing it a long time before Instagram.  I’ve been on Instagram for almost four or five years.  So it’s not like I just blew up overnight.  It took me a while to get to this point, and it’s consistency and constantly putting out content,” she said. However, it has only been recently, through her Instagram fame, that she gained recognition and became a true comedienne.“I started doing ranting videos,” she told the AFRO. “I didn’t even know it was comedy, I was talking to the camera about relatable topics and my followers just thought I was funny.  I was just being myself, so they made me a comedienne,” the millennial entertainer explained. This is B. Simone’s first time taking her comedy on the road.“I’ve been on stage with people who have been doing standup for 20, 15, 10 years.  I’ve only been doing standup for 11 months.  So I’m very new at it, but I have the privilege of growing with my fans,” she told the AFRO.Despite being a neophyte to the comedy game, from the looks of the sold out shows, her first tour is going well.“Almost every single show has been sold out, and it’s just an amazing, amazing experience,” B. Simone said.B. Simone (center) with “You’re My Boooyfriend Comedy Tour,” co-stars Darren Brand (left) and Desi Banks.Although she’s doing well on the road, the path to getting in the door was not easy.“We decided to put on the tour and my manager really fought for me,” she explained.  These clubs are like, ‘Who is B. Simone?’… ‘Is it Bruce Bruce?  Is it Kevin Hart?  Is it DeRay Davis?  How is she going to sell tickets?’ And they just had to have faith that my fans are going to come out and support.Simone, who is doing her own promo for the show, thanked Instagram and her followers for her success on and off the road. She isn’t fazed by the haters who question her trajectory, “just because she’s Instagram famous.”“It just shows that you can do anything you want to do.  The world is different,” she said. “But I’m going to use my platform to make money.  And the world is going to excel and move forward.“I’m going to use it and I’m going to move forward in a positive light. I don’t take any of it for granted.  I say it all the time- Instagram put me in a different mindset of what I can really, really do.  I’ve touched so many people,” she told the AFRO.“So I encourage young Black women to use it to your advantage.  I don’t care if you’re a doctor, and you need more people in your doctor’s office, or if you’re an actress…  That platform is needed for whatever occupation you’re in,” she said. The entertainer is also an entrepreneur.  A licensed cosmetologist who practiced 15 years, B. Simone is launching an upcoming vegan, cruelty-free makeup line and encouraged her followers to stay tuned for when its released. In the meantime, the comedienne is grinding on the road with the “You’re My Boooyfriend Comedy Tour” featuring Desi Banks, with whom she famously collaborates on skits, and “Wild ‘N Out” co-star Darren Brand.  The D.C. stop is on Dec. 26 at City Winery the Ivy City (1350 Okie St NE, Washington, DC 20002).“It’s going to be an amazing show.”Click here for tickets and for all things B.
