FRISCO, Texas – Houston Baptist’s Mikayla Vivens and Stephen F. Austin’s Danae Daron are the latest Southland Conference Volleyball Players of the Week, league officials announced Monday. All weekly awards are presented by MidSouth Bank.Vivens offensive efforts lifted the Houston Baptist (14-14, 7-7 SLC) squad to a five-set road victory over Northwestern State (10-13, 6-7 SLC) and 3-1 road-win over Southeastern Louisiana (2-24, 1-12 SLC) last week.SFA employed Daron’s defensive prowess as the Ladyjacks (27-2, 14-0 SLC) kept their unblemished conference record in tact following a pair of four-set wins over Sam Houston State (20-7, 12-3 SLC) and Abilene Christian (13-14, 10-5 SLC). Offensive Player of the Week: Mikayla Vivens, Houston Baptist– So. – Outside Hitter – San Antonio, TexasVivens posted a double-double in each match leading the Huskies to a pair of huge road wins that lifted HBU back to .500 in conference and overall standings. In Thursday’s five-set victory at Northwestern State, she recorded a career-high 25 kills, hitting .317, and adding 12 digs. In Saturday’s win at Southeastern Louisiana, Vivens posted 20 kills and 10 digs for her league-leading 20th double-double. Austin – Jr. – Middle Blocker – Crosby, TexasPutting up phenomenal numbers on both offense and defense, junior middle blocker Danae Daron helped SFA clinch at least a share of the 2018 Southland Conference title by putting forth one of the best front-row defensive performances in all of NCAA Division I volleyball this season. After notching a career-best three solo blocks in Thursday’s win over Sam Houston State, Daron turned in a career-best 13 blocks — the most in a four-set match by an NCAA Division I volleyball player this season — in the Ladyjacks’ four-set win over Abilene Christian Saturday afternoon. The 13 blocks represent the most by a Southland player this season and the second-most by an SFA player in program history. They also helped SFA extend the nation’s longest winning streak to 24 matches and allowed the Ladyjacks to finish their first undefeated home season since 2005.
